Hyundai Invests in Manufacturing Facility

Hyundai Translead, a major North American manufacturer of truck-trailers
recently completed a multi-million dollar addition of equipment in its
Fabrication Facility at their plant located in a Maquiladora in Mexico, just
south of San Diego.
The expansion and retooling of the Fab Shop, and the acquisition of two nearby suppliers provides ample production capacity for this growing manufacturer to create the vast majority of all fabricated parts required to produce its multiple line of container chassis, both freight and refrigerated, van trailers and domestic containers.
Garry Shidler, vice-president of production elaborated on the degree of control and the ultimate quality by saying, "Those are two of the main reasons for moving fabrication in-house. By producing the parts ourselves, we can control the process. He added, we know precisely when the parts will arrive, and we make sure they are fabricated to our quality standards."
With all installations in place, Hyundai Translead has the capability of producing almost 90% of the fabricated parts required. At the cornerstone of this operation has been the purchase of a number of state-of-the-art heavy fabricating punches, presses and plasma arc cutting shop equipment.
An Esterline Whitney 3700 ATC fab center adds significantly to the flexibility of the operation. With the capability of plasma arc cutting precise programmed shapes or punching a five-inch hole through 1/4" steel, this fab center has alleviated the necessity of outside purchases of many fabricated parts.
A plasma-cutting table is used for the majority of cutting and burning of special shaped holes in heavy steel. There are five presses, three used for punching and two for bending precise bending of steel shapes to precise conformity. A shear seemingly never stops to provide sufficient supplies of steel of the proper dimensions for the presses and Whitney.
Key to the quality of everything produced by Hyundai is the fact Underwriter Laboratories awarded the Plant IS0 9002 Certification back in May of 1996. The Quality Program carries forward today with every product produced. This is especially true of the Fab Shop and the two off site plants that were formerly suppliers.
